1. How often should I attend class? It is
most beneficial to have some sort of practice every
day to continue to build the flexibility and
strength you hope to achieve. However, it’s not
always feasible to make it to class, we suggest
attending at least twice per week.
2. What should I wear? Comfortable modest
clothing is suggested.
3. Is it all right to eat right before class?
It is suggested to refrain from eating a meal at
least 2 hours prior to class.
4. I’m pregnant; can I start a class now? If
you are fairly athletic already, try one of our
Gentle classes with modifications but please be sure
to address your condition with the instructor prior
to attending.
5. What if I can’t do all the poses? None of
us can. Yoga is never a competition. Listen to your
body and do what it is telling you. Always begin
slowly; your body will progress when ready.
6. What if I can’t touch my toes? To begin a
healthy practice you need only a flexible mind; your
body will follow.
7. What should I bring? Towels and mats are
available for use. We have few props and blankets
for support. However, it is suggested that with a
regular practice you invest in a mat, there are some
available for purchase at the front store. Water is
available at the studio and please feel free to stop
next door to Wholefoods Co-op for some extra yummy
and healthy treats.
8. Diet? The goal of the Yoga practice is to
be non-violent toward all beings the practice of
Ahimsa. A vegetarian diet, free of animal-based
products is a practice of non-violence but it is
also a work in progress. Being a vegetarian is a
choice and should occur with freedom of will. Try
different foods, find how your body reacts to them
and let you’re own personal being move toward
choices.
9. The biggie: Is Yoga a religion? No, Yoga
is a philosophy. However, in practicing your own
religion Yoga may deepen your experience of it and
draw you closer.
10. I’m not very young, can I do this?
Consider Yoga as preventive care. Regardless of age
anyone with a healthy lifestyle can practice Yoga.
Of course, the 20-year-old body will perform
differently from the 50-year-old body but through
practice with an open mind and heart you will find
what works for you.
11. What is Yoga? The word Yoga comes from
the Sanskrit word “yug” or yoke. It means union, to
join with a higher level.
12. What is OM? Om is a vibration; it is
believed that Om was the sound that was made when
God created the earth. It is not geared toward a
faith or religion; it is spoken to unify us all in
our practice. Our classes will occasionally close
with 3 Om’s and we ask always that earth be filled
with peace and joy.
